Are You a Candidate in the Upcoming Election?

City council has several tools to support affordable housing, including dedicating land and reducing red tape to make it more efficient for non-profit and Indigenous housing providers and co-ops to buy,  protect and develop truly affordable homes.  

We’re asking each mayoral and council candidate in Nanaimo to show their support for affordable housing in our community by signing the affordable housing pledge:

I pledge to:

• Advocate to other levels of government for truly affordable non-market housing targets to meet the unique needs of all low-income people in our community;
• Help streamline municipal planning, permitting and rezoning processes to fast-track development of on-market affordable rental housing;
• Vote to waive development cost-charges for non-profit and co-op housing developments;
• Support contributing public land at not cost to non-profit and co-op housing developments for new, affordable homes; and
• Approve all non-profit and co-op housing developments that are consistent with Imagine Nanaimo and work with municipal staff to minimize delays in the permitting process.
